Excerpt from High School History of Greece and Rome

The river system of all countries is decided by that of its Rivers mountains. As a general rule, high mountains and wide plains will be accompanied by large rivers, at the same time as narrow ravines will produce unmanageable torrents. The mountains of Greece are on a regular basis at a short distance from the sea, and nearly the entire rivers are, as a result, small and so rapid that they are unnavi gable. Most of them are comparatively shallow, aside from in winter and spring, when they are swollen with rains and melting snows.
