Upon the formative period of Rhode Island his tory, the creator of the current study has dwelt at length in Rhode Island: Its Making and its Meaning, published in 1902. The period in ques tion used to be characterized by a separatism that used to be intense, but subsequent periods have by no means been wanting in this feature, and it is in large part the object of the current book to point out the influ ence of separatism in determining the course of events in Rhode Island all the way through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
