AT A GLANCE
1. Box Spring Not Required
2. Storage Included
The Murphy bed (wall bed, fold-down bed, etc.) was the brainchild of William L. Murphy. The idea came to him at the turn of the 20th century in his cramped San Francisco apartment. Murphy didn’t invent the folding bed, but he did innovate the way it folds; using a closet doorjamb and a set of hinges, Murphy built a pivot system that allowed it to fold vertically and sit against the wall. The same allure of this design persists today: When floor space is at a premium, Murphy beds make the most of what’s available, proving especially useful for dorms, apartments, guest rooms, and fans of the tiny house movement. An included bookcase, complete with two fixed and four adjustable shelves, makes this particular Murphy bed storage-friendly too. A box spring is not required.
