Excerpt from A Report of the Republic of Honduras

This country is more’ than a century in the back of the age in all that constitutes g1 eatness Every obstacle has been thrown in the way of progress: her destiny, so far, has been written in blood, devas tation, and ruin.’ ‘even as under the dominion of Sp ain, foreigners were excluded from the country, and the inhabitants burthened by taxation, and in every 6ther imaginable way. The silver mines were worked under such exactions as to enrich the mother’country upc’m the labor of her subjects. Even under these burdens, Hondu ras bade fair to become the rival of Spain 1n the’ growth of grape. Spain became jealous of her as a rival in that inte1es’t, and, by military fmce, destroye’d every vineyard ln the country. In fact, every obstacle conceivable was thrown in the way of the prosperity of Central America. Oppression became intolerable. Lwar en sued, and Central America won her independence. Each province then formed its own government. Since that time internal feuds and civil Wars have kept every interest prostrated; and not until recently have the people been allowed to enjoy peace. ‘but all classes now express the hope that a better day has dawned, and they contemplate, with extreme déhght, the pleasures of peace. Thusiyou find the country almost as it came from the hands of the Creator, with its tall mountains, broad and fertile valleys untouch ed by the hand of indust1y. The timbered lands of these valleys are bad to clear. The t1ees are once in a while very large, but do not stand thick. Savannas only require a fence 1n many places. The lands of the timbered valleys I imagine best. The cost of putting tinbered land in cultivation 18 about $6 per acre. Even if tim ber 1s in abundance; but little can be foiind that can be split into rails, cfinsequently fencingrfor immediate use must be made in some other way. All that is necessary is, for a fence to last. Two.
