This 100-year narrative history of Hesston College tells the compelling story of Kansas Mennonites on the turn of the 20th century who developed a powerful vision for educating their children to steer the Mennonite church and to modify the arena. Each and every succeeding generation of teachers and administrators has nurtured and refined the founders’ vision. Decade by decade the narrative unfolds, from difficult beginnings through two world wars, the Great Depression, cultural transitions, theological challenges, financial crises, and shifting demographics. Kansas Mennonites on the turn of the 20th century developed a compelling vision for educating their children to steer the Mennonite church and to modify the arena. Each and every succeeding generation of teachers and administrators has nurtured and refined the founders’ vision. For a century, Hesston students have been shaped and nourished by the original, student-centered, socially wealthy, learning community frequently referred to as the “Hesston experience.” Hesston alumni have circled the globe as professionals, volunteers, service workers, and change agents.
