A Vindication of the Government of New-England Churches: Drawn from Antiquity; the Light of Nature; Holy Scripture; its Noble Nature; and from the Dignity Divine Providence has put upon it.

Description

First printed in 1717, A Vindication of the Government of New-England Churches by Reverend John Wise, looks at both biblical and civil forms of government.

In 1772, the book was once reprinted, and after being sold out quickly, reprinted over again. Wise demonstrates that, biblically:

God created all men equal and each and every man will have to be acknowledged by the state as equal to each and every man.
The end of all good government is to promote the happiness of all and the good of each and every man in all his rights: his life, liberty, estate, honor, and so forth.
The consent of the governed is the only legitimate basis for government.
Taxation without representation is tyranny.

One can definitely see how this would have struck a cord with the population of the American colonies in the 1770s.

This particular edition contains two versions of the book.
The first in its original printed form, as best as can also be replicated with current digital fonts. The long-s character (ſ) in addition to a handful of ligature characters (such as æ) are to be had in modern fonts. The “ct” ligature isn’t to be had and could not be used.
The second is a modernized printing, with more familiar characters.

This IS a public domain work. Most editions you are going to find are unedited OCR versions that contain frequent errors, no formatting (like bold or italicized text) and large gaps where one page ends and the next begins. This version has been restored.
