That is the first part of a two-volume set. This historical piece of writing is about the island of Antigua (Antigua & Barbuda) – all the way through the pre and post-emancipation era – and its inhabitants. It was once written by a Mrs Lanaghan – born in Cork, Ireland – who married an Antiguan and came to live to tell the tale the island. The tale of Antigua is ably described, embracing the time of the Caribs as much as 1844. This work was once done in the spirit of “an impartial view of slavery and the free labour systems”. Interspersed with anecdotes and legends, Antigua and the Antiguans speaks of the statistics of the island and biographical notices of the principal families. “Sworn to no party, of no sect am I”, was once the philosophical declaration of the creator, the use of Pope as her source. Antigua and the Antiguans tells the story of masters, slaves, administration, mal-administration, plots and counterplots – all skillfully described in flowing language and embracing dates and statistics as part of the text. That is classic writing that has earned the work its reputation. The two-volume set is the 4th reprint of the book and is a important addition to the many in depth books not only about Antigua but also about Caribbean history. (customer review by J. Richards)
