Antonia Merce, stage-named L. a. Argentina, used to be essentially the most celebrated Spanish dancer of the early 20th century. Her in depth musical and theatrical collaborations with members of the Spanish forefront — Manuel de Falla, Frederico Garcia Lorca, Enrique Granados, Nestor de L. a. Torre, Joaquin Nin, and with renowned Andalusian Gypsy dancers — mirror her importance as an inventive image for up to date Spain and its cultural history. When she died in 1936, newspapers world wide mourned the passing of the “Flamenco Pavlova.”
