Haida Elders and activists tell the epic story of the 1985 War within the Woods when, in spite of 72 arrests, they stared down the logging trucks and stopped transparent-cutting on Athlii Gwaii (Lyell Island), resulting in the creation of Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Web page.

“That is Haida land, you all know that, and we’re here to uphold the verdict of the Haida Nation. That is Haida land and there can be no further logging on this area.” Kilsli Kaji Sting, Miles Richardson Jr., at the line at Athlii Gwaii, 1985.
