Maryka Omatsu’s circle of relatives was once among the ones whose lives were shattered and properties taken by the Canadian government’s harsh and racist actions against Japanese Canadians throughout the Second World War. Bittersweet Passage is a moving account of the Japanese Canadian struggle to come back to terms with a painful history. It is usually the tale of the writer’s own odyssey to rediscover her circle of relatives’s past in both Japan and Canada and as a key figure within the movement to win redress from the federal government.
