Captain Christopher Newport of Limehouse, Virginia and the East Indies (American Roots in English Soil (ARIES) Series)

Description

Who used to be Captain Christopher Newport? What part did he play in the founding of the Jamestown Colony in 1607? What happened to him after Jamestown? We are hoping that you enjoy our account of the life of this strange sea-captain who used to be probably the most successful of Queen Elizabeth I’s privateers, led the first fleet to Jamestown, ensured that the colony used to be supplied and then started a new career as a Captain with the East India Company.
Our book used to be written by the ‘Captain Christopher Newport book team’, pupils from Y6 of the Mayflower and the Holy Family Primary Schools, Tower Hamlets, working with John Haden. These two schools serve the multi-ethnic community of London’s Docklands and at the side of the ‘East Meets West’ project have explored the story of a sailor who lived in London’s Limehouse in the 17th century.
This book is a part of the American Roots in English Soil (ARIES) Series, all of which were written by John Haden with the assistance of schools in England. Primary School pupils have researched, written, illustrated and marketed their stories about the lives of people from their own community who have contributed to the history of English speaking North The united states.
John Haden is a creator, lecturer and independent adviser to schools, and a former headteacher.
