Description

Theda Perdue examines the jobs and responsibilities of Cherokee women throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a time of intense cultural change. At the same time as building at the research of in advance historians, she develops a uniquely complex view of the results of contact on Native gender relations, arguing that Cherokee conceptions of gender persisted long after contact. Keeping up traditional gender roles in reality allowed Cherokee men and women to conform to new circumstances and adopt new industries and practices.
