Months after the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, where General George Custer and about 264 men of 7th Cavalry died, Major Marcus Reno, Custer’s second-in-command, used to be branded a coward within the press and by some fellow officers. In 1879 Reno opted for a court of inquiry into his behaviour On the battle which led to the demise of Custer’s command. On the end of 26 days of testimony the military board needed to make a decision whether to clear him or not of cowardice; yet rumours continued to follow. A surprising clique of officers who fought On the battle, were still prepared to criticize their former boss, as used to be Custer’s widow Elizabeth.
