Description

A Cleveland standby has gotten a makeover.

Since 1993, this colorful coffee-table photography book has been a standard gift used by Clevelanders who love to blow their own horns their city to out-of-towners.

Now, a new edition brings it up to the moment with the city’s contemporary landmarks and refurbished highlights.

Photographer Jonathan Wayne up to date several of the 102 photographs each and every time his book used to be reprinted right through the past nine years, to keep pace with the changing city. Out went the old—like the Browns, in 1995; Municipal Stadium; and the Cleveland Ballet. In came the new—Jacobs Field, the Rock Hall, the Great Lakes Science Center, the new Browns, the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Hershey Children’s Garden, and others.

Wayne also added photographs in response to customer requests. Most continuously requested: a photo of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra performing at Severence Hall (added in this new edition). The book’s most latest addition is the striking Frank Gehry–designed Peter B. Lewis Building, which opened in October, 2002.

Now, enough changes have accumulated to warrant the publication of a new edition. More than a quarter of the book’s photos are different from the first printing. The book’s new cover reflects the current shape of Cleveland’s skyline (including the new Carl B. Stokes U.S. Courthouse). And the notes section used to be carefully up to date with factual details about each and every place photographed.

Especially popular with business travelers (in part on account of its compact size), Cleveland: A Portrait of the City has been taken as a gift to countries on all seven continents—including Antarctica, in 2001.
