Mixing Palettes

Any smooth surface can work as a mixing palette. Art supply retailers offer plastic, ceramic, glass, plexiglass, acrylic, and even disposable paper palettes. Make a selection what works right for you. Butcher’s tray has a white enameled surface and to clean it, simply fill it with hot water and, after a couple of minutes, rub off the old paint.

Some artists use “stay wet” palettes, which are sealed trays that contain a wet sponge. This keeps acrylic paints moist and extends their workability. This is ideal for artists who work in fine detail or with liquid (fluid) acrylics. To keep the palette colors moist and active in the butcher’s tray, simply use a spray bottle of filtered water to periodically mist the palette surface very lightly; a little practice will lead you to just the correct amount of spritzing for your blending style.
