Diego’s Letter: Echoes of the Past

Description

On November 12, 1703 a letter was signed by Captain Diego Ramon. His letter to the king of Spain under the direction of the Secretary of the Indies provided documentation regarding the a lot of exploits of this young adventurer. His title was Sargent Major and his main duties were to give protection to the Missions, communities, and small ranches of people in the northern frontier of New Spain. They were in constant fear and needed protection from the many hostile tribes that were all the time beating the war drums. Diego was educated and trained in warfare that suited that day and age. He was taught to fight as a native warrior. He followed in the footsteps of his father Captain Joseph Ramon but unlike his father, he also used other means to acquire peace. He used his wealth to fortify and take care of peace a number of the tribes, Missions and settlements. The letter provided factual names, locations and certifications proving that he had done what was claimed. Probably the most accomplishments were considered miraculous by the people. His name was acclaimed though very few people today, have no idea who he was. If the claims are true. many people living today owe their existence to him. The soldiers that fought with him aren’t named but their accomplishments were just as important. As a descendant of Diego, I share this important a part of history of early Texas and what he accomplished.
