Durban: A Pictorial History

Description

This pictorial history of Durban presents an array of old photographs showing the town as it grew from a small settlement of wattle-and-daub bungalows into the principle port of South Africa. Even though buildings are the point of interest of the book, many street scenes capture the folks and the dress, and the progress from horse and oxcart, through to trams, buses and cars. The overall chapter looks at one of the crucial gems of old Durban that experience survived. Many of those buildings are under pressure from neighbouring high-rises and property developers, and Ian Morrison ends his nostalgic meandering during the history of Durban with a sincere plea for the preservation of what little is left of a more gracious era.
