All through the period between 1895-1920, Dallas Lore Sharp was an extremely successful writer of books on natural history subjects in North The united states. Excluding his books, he wrote hundreds of magazine articles for a few of the popular publications of the era.

In the summer of 1912, Sharp traveled from his home in Boston to enroll in William L. Finley in Oregon. William Finley was also a noted author, but was better known for his wildlife photography. All through that summer Finley took Sharp over a wide area in Oregon. A number of the locations they visited were areas in which Finley had done A number of the photography work which made him famous.

Sharp and Finley made the dangerous climb to the sea bird colonies on Three Arch Rocks off the Oregon coast, crossed the high desert to famed Malheur marsh, rode horses into the Wallowa Mountains searching for the few remaining bighorn sheep, tried to bring a load of trout across the high desert to stock streams, and climbed Mt. Hood, all within that summer.
