Until recently an English translation of Galen’s At the Properties of Foodstuffs didn’t exist. This work, by some of the greatest of ancient physicians, provides a lucid description of the ways wherein foods were thought to have an effect on the body and were in turn suffering from it. It comprises revealing fragments of social comment. A retired physician with a particular interest in gastroenterology, Owen Powell offers essentially the most accurate translation of the work currently to be had, including the first detailed introduction, statement and discussion of terminology.
