Virginia Black, the writer’s mother, reduced in size both bulbar and spinal polio just weeks after the first American children had been inoculated with Jonas Salk’s controversial vaccine. Virginia Black did not live to tell the tale, but her daughter, six years old when her mother died, grew as much as write the most important first-hand account of this frightening crippler.
