Department retail outlets John A. Brown’s, Kerr’s and Halliburton’s ruled supreme in Oklahoma City. From “lucky penny” giveaways to defying blue laws, the 3 big department retail outlets did no matter what it took to entertain and entice. The lovely display windows of Kerr’s downtown once lured shoppers inside, however the closing of Halliburton’s in 1961 signaled the overall days of downtown shopping. Adoption fairs and civil rights take a seat-ins at Brown’s wove the shop into the social fabric of town. Authors Ajax Delvecki and Larry Johnson chronicle the stories, history and memories of the most productive of Oklahoma City shopping.
