In 1839 a journalist for the New Orleans Picayune, Matthew C. Field, joined an organization of merchants and tourists headed west at the Santa Fe Trail. Leaving Independence, Missouri, early in July “with a couple of wagons and a carefree spirit,” Field recorded his vivid impressions of commute westward at the Santa Fe Trail and, at the go back travel, eastward along the Cimarron Route. Written in verse in his journal and in eighty-five articles later published within the Picayune, Field’s observations be offering the up to date reader a singular glimpse of life within the settlements of Mexico and at the Santa Fe Trail.
