Across Guatemala, Mayan peoples are struggling to get better from decades of cataclysmic upheaval–non secular conversions, civil war, displacement, military repression. Richard Wilson carried out long-term analysis with Q’eqchi’-speaking Mayas within the province of Alta Verapaz to establish how these events affected social organization and identity. He reveals that their rituals of fertility and healing–abandoned within the 1970s all over Catholic and Protestant evangelizations–have been reinvented by an ethnic revivalist movement led by Catholic lay activists, who are searching for to renovate the earth cult with the intention to create a brand new pan-Q’eqchi’ ethnic identity.
