Of interest to all those fascinated about Gilded Age architecture and interior furnishings

Duringthe Gilded Age of the late 1880s through the 1910s―the era of Carnegie,Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt―American millionaires displayed their prosperity bybuilding and decorating impressive homes. In 1893 Richmond-born financier JamesHenry Dooley and his wife, Sallie May Dooley, added to those prestigiousresidences with their 100-acre country estate, Maymont. The Dooleys spent threedecades filling its sumptuous interiors with treasures from around the worldand establishing Maymont’s magnificent gardens, landscape, and architecture.They bequeathed Maymont, completely intact, to the City of Richmond for its useas a public museum and park. Nowadays, Maymont stands out as an unusually completeexample of a Gilded Age estate. The place of dwelling, gardens, and grounds remain verymuch as they were right through the Dooleys’ years, at the same time as the restored servant areaspresent the upstairs-downstairs way of life of the times.

This lavishly illustrated and elegantly designed volume introduces the opulentestate of Maymont to all people who are interested in the history and grandeurof the Gilded Age in the US.
