Description

A bona fide classic, at first published in 1872, Mountaineering within the Sierra Nevada remains to be exciting reading. It describes the perils and pleasures experienced by Clarence King (1842–1901) even as conducting the primary geological survey of California within the 1860s. His language used to be equal to the marvels he found, and here with unfading brilliance are his accounts of scaling such mountains as Tyndall, Shasta, and Whitney. The chapters at the Yosemite Valley and surrounding High Sierras were written even as he used to be surveying the bounds of a newly designated national park. There also are delightful vignettes of western characters, including a Sierra artist and a circle of relatives of Pike County hog farmers.
