Description

The quantity offers an account of Oxyrhynchus as an ancient town and archaeological web site by surveying its subject matter culture and art objects, together with sculpture and draftsmanship, against the backdrop of the papyrus texts. It includes treatments of the web site itself (town plan, topography, monuments, art and architecture), the history of the excavations within the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in addition to a synthesis of the examine of social, cultural and intellectual life beneath Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule. Original contributions by E. G. Turner and W. M. F. Petrie are reprinted; the unique archaeological reports are edited with notes.
