This history of a state-operated institution for the developmentally disabled in New Gloucester, Maine is a story that continues as of late, because Pineland and its many counterparts still influence care within the state. It presents a clear-eyed view of residents and body of workers who gave their hearts and souls to the care of others and people who didn’t, people who were bright and people who weren’t, people who escaped and people who stayed, people who hated and people who loved, people who lit fires and people who put them out. It was once the most efficient of places, it was once the worst of places, Dickens may have said, and he would have been right. It all depended on who you were and why you were there and when . . .
