Description

The Puget Sound region was once inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before settlers arrived. After to start with landing at Alki Beach in West Seattle, the Denny Party established a settlement at the eastern shores of Elliott Bay in 1852. For years, the cultural and commercial life centered around Yesler’s Wharf and Sawmill. Town grew abruptly following the 1870s after the invention of coal within the Cascade foothills. All the commercial district was once incinerated within the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, however it was once quickly rebuilt out of enduring brick and stone. Town stumbled economically following the Panic of 1893, however it recovered after the Klondike Gold Rush started in 1897. By the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Seattle was once the undisputed leader within the Pacific Northwest.
