Description
All through World War II and the immediate postwar era, both The US and Costa Rica experienced dramatic changes. The US assumed world leadership and the accompanying responsibilities; Costa Rica encountered a ways-reaching difficulties that culminated within the Civil War of 1948 and the upward push to power of José Figueres. Longley examines why The US supported Figueres and emphasizes the history and role of Costa Ricans, primarily the figueristas, in keeping up good relations in this kind of difficult era. Figueres implemented economic and political nationalism, which produced domestic and international tensions, and despite its rejection of equivalent policies in Guatemala and Iran, The US supported Figueres against domestic and foreign threats.
