Description

Symbolic ornamentation inspired by ancient Greek and Roman art is an extended-standing Western tradition. Eighteenth century English gun designers, drawing upon this custom, engraved classical imagery on firearms gifted or traded to American Indians–imagery that acquired new significance within the context of westward expansion in america.
The writer explores the history of those ornamental patterns and unearths a system of allegory that inadvertently had deep religious that means for Indians, and enshrined the “noble savage” as a logo of national liberty within the early American republic.
