Description

This oversize volume (12.5×15.25<">) affords large-format reproductions of 125 b&w images of early buildings designed by Louis Sullivan. The pictures were made with care by Sullivan’s photographers in close collaboration with him, the usage of large view cameras, hand-ground lenses, and special films. For more than 40 years, Crombie (1914-1999) championed The pictures as the principle means for figuring out Sullivan’s work. In a collaborative effort, he and Plank (U. of Virginia) prepared an exhibit in 1991; after which, even if Crombie felt that The pictures speak more than words may ever convey, Plank undertook investigation of the photographers and the provenance of The pictures, in addition to preparation of interpretive text. The fruit in their collaboration, this lavish volume of photos and text is a huge contribution to architectural studies. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
