But little systematic arrangement has been attempted in the grouping of the following sketches; there has been no idea of balancing New England or New York against Virginia or the Carolinas; no setting up of Ptiritan stock against Cavalier, or Protestant against CatholicW ehave srtnply taken the characters as we chanced to find them, the use of such as seemed best illustrative of the period in which they lived or of the principles for which they stood. It’s not conceivable to claim absolute authenticity of detail in the less important facts. In not a couple of cases, such detailed information has been lost, or if found would in no wise strengthen either the interest or the value of the personality. In the preparation of our work, we have not only searched general andS tate histories, county histories where they could be found, biographies, and family genealogies, but have corresponded directly with descendants of a majority of the notable women whose lives are here recorded.
