Description

Here is the University’s heritage – more than two centuries of striving for a state university, Charles Calvert’s luck in creating an agricultural college, its struggles all the way through the Civil War, its evolution into a tuition-free other folks’s college, and its growth into a school. That is the tale of flamboyant Curley Byrd and football groups that won national championships; the tale of scholarly Wilson Elkins who built excellence within the study rooms; and the tale of John Toll, Brit Kirway, and Dan Mote who created an engine of the economy that reached some distance beyond the campus, and who elevated the University to its present day elite status.
