Thirty Years and Time Immemorial: Commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Official Federal Recognition of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, 1981-2011

Description

The journey taken by the citizens of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe of Sequim, Washington as they navigated the legal waters to gaining federal recognition is chronicled on this book. Between signing the Point No Point Treaty of 1855 and gaining “official” recognition in 1981, the Tribe experienced more than 100 years of americaand downs because of changing federal policy toward Indian Tribes. Referred to as “the strong people,” this small Tribe weathered decades of legal struggles, after all becoming one of the vital first Tribes within the nation to realize recognition through a “new” regulatory process made law in 1978. The next 30+ years have proven that a small Tribe of decided people can accomplish much, for themselves and for their community.
