One of the essential industrial landmarks in the nation lies in the heart of historic Richmond. The Tredegar Iron Works was once the most prodigious ordnance supplier to the Confederacy all the way through the Civil War, in addition to an industrial behemoth in its own right. Named for the native land of the Welsh engineers who built it, Tredegar remained one in all Richmond’s chief industrial entities for over a century. It produced ordnance all the way through five wars and helped build the railroads that unexpectedly spread across the nation all the way through the Gilded Age. Writer Nathan Vernon Madison, utilizing a wealth of number one sources and firsthand accounts, chronicles the full history of a Richmond industrial icon.
