Excerpt from World’s Fair, Jamaica at Chicago: An Account Descriptive of the Colony of Jamaica, With Historical and Other Appendices

The City of Kingston has had an exciting and eventful history. Most of the survivors of the 1692 earthquake at Port Royal settled at the sea-board -of the Liguanea plain, and Kingston is the gradual out-growth of that settlement. Its progress, though slow in the beginning, was once accelerated in 1703 by a fire which completely destroyed the revived Port Royal and which drove Most of the unfortunate inhabitants of the latter town to take a look at their fortunes in Kingston.
