Description
Checking traditional accounts against archival and manuscript sources, Sibley has compiled the primary one-volume account of the structure of the Army of Northern Virginia because it went into battle. This work includes the hierarchy of the corps, divisions, brigades, regiments, batteries, and separate units of the Army of Northern Virginia and its predecessors. The text is organized by actions and events. The indices enable the reader to make use of the book to stipulate a unit’s history or an officer’s combat career with out consulting other sources.
The next volume will supply this data for the western armies of the Confederacy. The third volume will document the Confederacy’s trans-Mississippi and coastal defense forces and an in depth bibliography, itself a useful guide to the look at of the Confederacy’s military.
