Description
Excerpt from A History of Greece
IN my preceding volume, I have described the first eleven years of the reign of Dionysius referred to as the Elder, as despot at Syracuse, down to his first great War against the Carthaginians; which war ended by a sudden turn of fortune in his favour, at a time when he used to be hard pressed and in fact be sieged. The victorious Carthaginian army before Syracuse used to be utterly ruined by a terrible pesti lence, followed by ignominious treason at the a part of its commander Imilkon.
