Amongst people who have described that portion of Spanish South The usa, which has recently turn into the theatre of such agitating and necessary scenes, few had better opportunities of prosecut ing inquiries connected with the political economy and commercial resources of Venezuela and the islands in its vicinity, than M. Lavaysse, who resided fifteen years in the West Indies, and used to be latterly a landed proprietor at Trinidad, whence he paid frequent visits to the opposite continent.
