Beginning with a portrait of Buddy Bolden, “the primary man of jazz”, this book also accommodates Danny Barker’s own recollections of Storyville in its last days, and of life at the road with Cab Calloway, with a memoir of trombonist Charlie Green. It includes subject material from the Jazzland Research Guild, a company Barker founded within the 1940s to investigate the backgrounds of his colleagues. The text has been edited by Alyn Shipton from Barker’s copious drafts and notes, along side transcripts in their conversations in combination. In it, Bolden is recalled by jazz artists Jelly Roll Morton and Bunk Johnson, with whom Danny Barker worked. The book aims to brings to life turn-of-the-century New Orleans in detail.
