Description
The catapult (katapeltikon) used to be invented under the patronage of Dionysius I, tyrant of Syracuse, within the 4th century bc. To start with simplest the arrow-firing variant used to be used, and it used to be no longer until the reign of Alexander the Great that stone-projecting catapults were introduced. The Romans adopted these weapons throughout the Punic Wars and further developed them, before introducing the brand new arrow-firing ballista and stone-throwing onager. This title traces the continuously controversial design, development and construction of those weapons all the way through the history of the classical world.
