TOBAGO – Colonization in the 17th Century (An analytical History of Tobago Book 5)

Description

Though adventurers, explorers, colonizers, buccaneers, privateers and pirates are the groups best associated with exploits within the Caribbean, in the back of these were powerful kings and rich aristocrats. There were dukes, lords, mayors and barons in the back of these ventures. In a foreign country ventures and colonization were driven by an aristocracy and not by sea-fearing mariners and daring risk-takers as are common notions strewn by historic accounts. In a foreign country ventures were calculated investments and not random adventurism. Ventures were planned, capital used to be raised, agreements were reached, companies were established and leaders were gotten smaller to conduct these missions. The powerful and the rich operated through sea-captains, managers and mercenaries. In effect, many who are cited as “discoverers and colonizers” were in reality hired hands, though several rich and powerful aristocrats ventured in my view into the so-referred to as New World. For instance, Sir Thomas Roe, a pioneer within the settling of Virginia; used to be on his way to India as an emissary of King James I when he visited Tobago in 1611.
