Description

Brooke Larson’s interpretive research of the history of Andean peasants finds the challenges of nation making within the republics of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia all through the volatile nineteenth century. Nowhere in Latin The us were postcolonial transitions more turbulent than within the Andes, where communal indigenous roots grew deep and where the “Indian downside” gave the impression so discouraging to liberalizing states. The research raises broader problems in regards to the interplay of liberalism, racism, and ethnicity within the formation of exclusionary “republics with out citizens” over the nineteenth century.
